For Rising 6th–12th Graders
This course will focus on general aspects of ecology, wilderness survival, and emergency bushcraft techniques. Students will learn to make fire using different methods, shelters and traps that are specific to weather and exotic biomes, and basic tools. No physical task will require the use of anything more substantial than a camping knife. Students will also be introduced via lecture to medical impacts of exposure, infection, and malnutrition. Students will be provided a U.S. Army Survival Manual and select materials from which the curriculum will be guided. This course will be predominantly held outside; however, there may be brief indoor lectures where we discuss plans and scientific rationales for the activities.
